Strawberry Stars
First Impression
I actually expected to see strawberries or something of that sort but I was greeted with a stretched out picture of daisies and a poorly made banner. I also think of Georgina when I see this layout but I guess everyone loves her CSS. I’m glad you read the rules though.
When you’ve received your review, feel free to remove my link from your sidebar.
I like that you use WordPress. It’s an incredible blogging system and you seem to understand how to use it.
Layout
Your layout works both in FF and IE which is really great. Good job with that. I feel that your banner is poorly made because it looks as if you just took Georgina’s stock photo and stretched it out to 800 pixels to create a banner. Instead of doing this, you could have used a few pictures to blend them or just resized the picture proportionately and added your site name. The popular font “Scriptina” has been overused and it doesn’t work well with this banner. It’s actually a font that has been kicked to the curb because of its overuse 7 years ago when “tweens” spelled the word productions, “pr0duckshunz”. My advice to you is to stay away from this font and use another font more suitable. Fonts like “Violation”, “DpScript”, or “Jane Austen” are really nice cursive fonts you could download. Don’t use them on every single layout though!! You should always mix things up but use an appropriate font for the banner.
On your banner, you also write, “My own epic drama my own scripted page” in a cursive font that really doesn’t go with the banner. What I mean is that the fonts you’ve chose don’t work well together. You have 3 different fonts on the banner making it look clustered and also exposing the fact that you didn’t do much to the banner to make it your own. It simply looks like Georgina’s stock image stretched out + wording. Get creative with stock images. They’re a lot more difficult to use than celebrity images because inspiration comes readily with them but when it comes to flowers, you really have to push your creativity and Photoshop skills.
CSS
It seems that your HTML is validated, props! Your footer is a good distance away from your content which is great. I think your post titles should be a bit bigger. Try increasing the font to 14 or 16 pt. The background color you’ve chosen is a little dark on my screen. It may be lighter on others but I personally think that you should make it a little bit lighter so that your links and your text pop out a little more. Your links are gray and I don’t see it as a color that would go with your layout. Perhaps a dark green would work better or a Granny Apple Smith green. It wouldn’t work well with your current background color though because you’d have to make it lighter in order for the colors to really pop out.
The orange left border for your blockquote is a little harsh on the eyes over your green background. Like I stated, if your background were just a tad bit lighter and the orange a tad bit lighter, they’d be in perfect harmony.
Pages
Consists of Owner, Website, and Visitor.
Owner
You’re pretty young! This page is organized quite nicely although I think that “Toybox” should go before “Etc”. Also, you can’t be “in TV”. You’d have to say, “I was on TV”.
Site
“After teaching myself on HTML, PHP. CSS and FTP” should be “After teaching myself HTML, PHP, CSS, and FTP”.
“Ohw, I really had a hard time thinking for my website’s name.” should be “I really had a difficult time coming up with a name for my website”.
This page is short and to the point. There’s not much to improve upon this page other than the grammar.
Visitor
Visitor content includes downloadables, graphics, tutorials, interact, reads, and et cetera.
Downloadables
I don’t know what Plurk is but that preview for it is terrible. You should make the preview pop-up in a new tab/window and there are things blurred out on your screen shot. I feel that previews should simulate what the layout would look like on Plurk. Most Myspace resource sites always have previews of a mock Myspace profile with their layout. Try doing this instead of taking a screen shot.
Your WordPress themes link doesn’t go anywhere.
Your Blogger themes are all pink! They look pretty basic though. But I actually like some of them more than your current layout.
Graphics
I’m not really sure if anyone would generally use these particular blank buttons you offer because they’re so simple to make that people should be able to make them on their own.
When I first saw your pixels I thought, “this looks like she made it in MS Paint,” and then I read the sentence above your pixels which reads, “These are some pixels and Illustrations that I made in MS Paint. Please credit me if you use any of these.” I was under the impression that pixels were made with Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. The last three are probably the best out of the five. Try making pixels with Photoshop instead of MS Paint unless you can make the pixels look more like the lollipop and less like that heart shape thing. It’s so obvious you made that one in MS Paint. You want to make your pixels as sharp as possible so that it doesn’t look poorly made. I don’t know why you said there were illustrations on this page because there aren’t any.
The wallpaper is cute, you should add more sizes.
Most of these icons render really poor quality. There is also a random pixel of a bear at the bottom of the page…which leads me to a “you found me” page. You’re pretty young so I guess this is the “in” thing for you guys but it’s kind of useless! I’d get rid of it if I were you but that’s just my opinion. The first four icons also render poor quality and they are poorly made. They’re not very creative and not appealing. I’m sure you can make better looking icons.
Tutorials
This is actually a nice tutorial for Paint but you should add more tutorials for other programs soon!
Interact
These are a great way to get visitors. “Guess That Thing” is a cute interactive although your form doesn’t work though. I still think “Find Haimi” is pointless. The incentives to participate in these interactions aren’t that great. You should offer free advertisement.
Reads
I didn’t read the story but those are some really interesting facts!
ETC
You should add a form to this page to make things more convenient.
I offer these services.
Install Bellabuzz
Install Wordpress
Install Fanupdate
Instead of saying this, you could say, “As a service, I offer the installation of specific programs. These programs include Bellabuzz, WordPress, and FanUpdate.”
Grammar/Spelling
I’m aware that English isn’t your first language and your grammar is better than most English speaking kids your age, so props. But you do need to work on your grammar a little! I didn’t notice any spelling errors so your only problem is grammar. Work on proper sentence structuring and tenses.
Conclusion
You have very little visitor content and I think that the content you offer is really basic and some are unnecessary. My biggest suggestion for you is to practice more with Photoshop or whatever image editing program you have and to be more original. Your CSS looks identical to Georgina’s so you really should discover your own style instead of modifying hers.
If your site is a Blog, I’d stick to just blogging instead of offering random graphics. Although you can get more visitors that way, your site is mostly a Blog so if you want more visitors, write interesting Blogs!
Also, stay away from Scriptina! That font is overused, overrated, and “out of style”. It just doesn’t work with your layout so work on minimalistic header images without a bunch of fonts on them. Get creative! A stretched out picture of daisies with fonts is not creative! I can tell that you have potential especially since you’re really young so good luck with everything. I’m sure your graphics will improve over time.
